A power infrastructure project in Kazakhstan required a reliable cooling solution for a 35kV, 16MVA oil-immersed power transformer.
The transformer was designed for outdoor operation in Kazakhstan, where significant seasonal temperature variations, cold winters, hot summers, dry conditions and airborne dust can place additional demands on transformer cooling equipment.
The customer required a radiator system that could provide stable heat dissipation under changing ambient conditions while maintaining reliable oil tightness, mechanical strength, corrosion protection and accurate connection to the transformer tank.
Based on the transformer specifications and local environmental conditions, we provided a customized transformer finned radiator solution for the project.
Kazakhstan has a continental climate with significant seasonal temperature variations.
Outdoor electrical equipment may experience very cold winters, hot summers, strong winds and dry, dusty conditions. These factors need to be considered when designing cooling equipment for oil-immersed transformers.
One of the key environmental challenges in Kazakhstan is the large difference between winter and summer temperatures.
Transformer radiators need to remain mechanically stable and reliable during repeated temperature changes.
The radiator design therefore needs to consider:
In northern and central areas of Kazakhstan, winter temperatures can become very low.
Low temperatures can affect transformer oil viscosity and natural oil circulation.
For this reason, the radiator system needs to work together with the transformer’s overall cooling and oil circulation design to maintain stable thermal performance during cold-weather operation.
Although Kazakhstan is known for its cold winters, summer temperatures can also become high, particularly in inland and southern regions.
High ambient temperatures reduce the temperature difference between the radiator and surrounding air.
A sufficient heat-transfer area is therefore important for maintaining the required transformer temperature rise during high-load operation.
Dry and windy conditions can expose outdoor electrical equipment to dust and airborne particles.
Dust accumulation on radiator surfaces can affect airflow and increase maintenance requirements.
The radiator configuration should therefore provide suitable fin spacing for effective airflow and easier inspection and cleaning.
Some regions of Kazakhstan experience strong winds and harsh weather conditions.
The radiator assembly therefore requires sufficient mechanical strength and reliable mounting connections for long-term outdoor operation.
Although Kazakhstan has a relatively dry continental climate in many areas, outdoor equipment is still exposed to rain, snow, moisture, temperature changes and atmospheric pollutants.
The radiator therefore requires an appropriate surface-treatment and anti-corrosion coating system.
For industrial areas or locations with more aggressive environmental exposure, enhanced corrosion protection can be specified.
The customer had several requirements for the 35kV, 16MVA transformer radiator system.
The radiator needed to provide reliable heat dissipation during both hot summer operation and changing seasonal conditions.
The cooling system needed to remain compatible with transformer operation during cold-weather conditions.
The radiator configuration needed to maintain effective airflow while allowing practical inspection and cleaning.
The radiator had to withstand long-term outdoor exposure and changing weather conditions.
The radiator needed to match the transformer’s tank dimensions, flange positions and oil connections to minimize on-site modification.
The customer required consistent product quality and reliable delivery to coordinate with the transformer manufacturing and installation schedule.
Based on the customer’s requirements, we provided a customized finned radiator solution for a 35kV, 16MVA oil-immersed transformer.
The radiator system was designed to support ONAN/ONAF cooling, allowing the transformer cooling capacity to adapt to different operating loads.
Under normal operating conditions, transformer oil circulates naturally through the radiator.
Heat generated by the transformer is transferred to the oil, then from the oil to the radiator surface and finally to the surrounding air.
When transformer loading increases, forced-air cooling can be activated.
Fans increase airflow across the radiator surface, improving heat transfer and providing additional cooling capacity.
The ONAN/ONAF configuration provides greater flexibility for transformer operation under changing load and ambient conditions.
The radiator solution was developed according to the following project factors:
The radiator dimensions, fin configuration, header pipes and connection flanges can be customized according to the approved transformer drawings.
This helps ensure compatibility with the transformer tank and reduces installation adjustments at the project site.
