A transformer manufacturer in South Africa was producing a 10MVA 33kV/11kV oil-immersed transformer for a mining project.
The customer had its own transformer manufacturing and assembly capabilities, but its existing production process was not sufficient for the required custom corrugated transformer tank.
The main challenges involved tank structure, corrugated panel fabrication, accessory interfaces and dimensional control.
The customer therefore approached Radiastar for an engineered tank solution.
The customer required a corrugated tank suitable for a 10MVA, 33kV/11kV, 50Hz transformer and compatible with its existing transformer design.
The key requirements included:
Radiastar’s engineering team reviewed the customer’s transformer GA drawing, active-part dimensions, bushing layout and cooling arrangement before developing the tank manufacturing design.
Instead of supplying a standard tank, Radiastar customized the:
This allowed the finished tank to integrate with the customer’s existing transformer design.
| Parameter | Specification |
|---|---|
| Application | South African Mining Project |
| Transformer Rating | 10MVA |
| Voltage | 33kV / 11kV |
| Frequency | 50Hz |
| Tank Type | Corrugated Transformer Tank |
| Transformer Type | Oil-Immersed |
| Cooling | ONAN / ONAF |
| Construction | Welded Steel |
| Bushing Arrangement | Customized |

Radiastar took responsibility for the tank manufacturing process from engineering drawings through final inspection:
Engineering Review → Corrugated Panel Forming → Welding → Flange Assembly → Dimensional Inspection → Leak Testing → Surface Treatment → Final Inspection
Particular attention was given to weld quality, dimensional accuracy, flange alignment and oil tightness, which are critical for an oil-immersed transformer tank.
Radiastar delivered the customized corrugated transformer tank to support the customer’s 10MVA 33kV/11kV mining transformer.
The project demonstrated that Radiastar can act as an engineering and manufacturing partner for transformer manufacturers, particularly when the customer’s existing tank-production capability cannot meet a specific structural or dimensional requirement.
Rather than replacing the customer’s transformer manufacturing capability, Radiastar complemented it with specialized transformer tank engineering and production expertise.
The key value was not simply the ability to fabricate steel.
Radiastar provided:
Transformer Tank Engineering + Custom Design + Specialized Manufacturing + Quality Control
This enables transformer manufacturers to outsource technically demanding tank projects while retaining control of their own transformer assembly and testing.
