Saudi 50 MVA / 110 kV Transformer Radiator Bank

Project Overview

A power utility in Saudi Arabia required a reliable radiator bank solution for a 50 MVA, 110 kV oil-immersed power transformer. The transformer was designed for outdoor operation under Saudi Arabia’s high ambient temperature and demanding climatic conditions.

The customer needed a radiator cooling system capable of providing sufficient heat dissipation while maintaining compatibility with the existing transformer tank and installation layout.

Our engineering team developed a customized transformer radiator bank based on the transformer’s thermal requirements, mounting dimensions, oil flow arrangement, and site conditions.

Customer Challenges

The project presented several key challenges:

1. High Ambient Temperature

Saudi Arabia’s high ambient temperature creates more demanding transformer cooling conditions. The radiator bank needed sufficient heat dissipation capacity to prevent excessive transformer oil and winding temperatures during continuous operation.

2. Limited Installation Space

The available installation area around the transformer was restricted. The radiator bank therefore had to provide the required cooling capacity without unnecessarily increasing the overall footprint.

3. Existing Transformer Interface

The radiator bank had to match the customer’s existing transformer tank, including:

  • Radiator mounting centers
  • Oil inlet and outlet connections
  • Flange dimensions
  • Mounting brackets
  • Radiator bank arrangement
  • Installation orientation

4. Long-Term Outdoor Operation

The equipment would be installed outdoors and exposed to high temperatures, dust and harsh environmental conditions. Corrosion protection and coating quality were therefore important considerations.

Our Solution

Customized Radiator Bank Design

Based on the customer’s 50 MVA / 110 kV transformer, Radiastar designed a customized radiator bank to meet the required thermal performance and installation dimensions.

The solution included:

  • Multiple detachable radiator panels
  • Optimized radiator panel spacing
  • Customized mounting center distance
  • Transformer-compatible oil connections
  • Heavy-duty mounting brackets
  • Anti-corrosion surface treatment
  • Factory pressure and leakage testing

The radiator bank was designed for ONAN / ONAF cooling applications, allowing the transformer cooling capacity to be increased when required by operating conditions.

Engineering Focus

Rather than selecting a standard radiator based only on transformer MVA, we considered the complete application:

Transformer rating → Heat dissipation requirement → Radiator dimensions → Number of panels → Oil circulation → Ambient temperature → Installation space

This approach helps ensure that the radiator bank is properly matched to the transformer rather than simply oversized or undersized.
